A former school (the ‘Alice-Salomon-Schule') in the Hannover district of Hainholz is currently being refurbished and converted into an arts centre.
By applying 15 and 30 cm insulation to the top-floor ceilings and insulating the outer walls to a thickness of 12 cm, a 60 per cent overall saving in energy used for space heating will be achieved. Construction work is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. The ‘Brüder Grimm' primary school in the city's Vahrenwald neighbourhood has also undergone refurbishment. By insulating the walls and roof to a thickness of 18 cm, and applying a 10 cm-thick insulation layer to the basement ceiling, the total energy needed for space heating requirements will be reduced by 70 per cent.
